Hawthorn Wins Aquatic Facility Excellence Award



Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre have been awarded ‘Excellence in Aquatic Safety – By an Aquatic Facility (Large)’ as part of the National Aquatic Industry Safety Awards.

The awards are an initiative of the National Aquatic Industry Safety Committee to acknowledge the achievements of aquatic facilities and individuals towards improving health and safety outcomes within their communities.

Craig Roberts, National Manager Aquatic Industry, Royal Life Saving Society – Australia said ,“By celebrating the excellent work being done by individuals and organisations, our goal is to motivate people within the industry to increase the level of safety for their community, cultivating an environment where health and safety initiatives are continually being reviewed and developed.”

“Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre were recognised for their inclusive approach to harnessing a safety culture, and generating a holistic health hub for their community.”

Since re-opening in 2014, Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre (HALC) has developed an in-house health and safety committee. There is a nominated volunteer from each department who is allocated specific responsibilities to help drive and promote our strong health and safety culture.

Customer feedback is an important element of the facilities operations. Feedback is encouraged throughout the facility with multiple touchpoints available. Feedback provided is displayed on screens throughout the centre with a response from the management team to show their action.

The facility offers a central location for their member’s needs. In addition to their aquatic and fitness programs, providing childcare, a health clinic, and nutritious traffic light rating café.

Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre has recently received The Platinum Pool safety recognition. As part of the Platinum Pool program, the Centre under took a thorough safety audit through Life Saving Victoria which required an in depth assessment of the Centre. HALC was proud to achieve a 100per cent score.

The award recognises demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of aquatic health and safety outcomes through the creation and continuation of an outstanding safety culture.
