Australia Swims launches the Lap Australia Challenge

The teams are away for the Lap Australia challenge!

Lap Australia is a challenge to get all Australians swimming during Australia Swims (19 - 28 January) as part of a participation movement to get the nation active. A perfect complement to Sport Australia's 'Find your 30' campaign, Australia Swims is about reigniting our passion with swimming - a vital lifeskill, sport and recreational pastime.

To complete the Lap, collectively we need to swim 35,877 kms. This year eight teams are aiming to achieve that with their swim tribe.

Teams taking part in this year’s event include:

  • Citizens of the Reef, led by  Australian Dolphins Shayna Jack, Jake Packard and Mack Horton - #TeamCOTR;

  • Soldier On, led by Paralympic Champions and Australian Dolphins Ellie Cole OAM and Brendan Hall OAM - #TeamSoldierOn;

  • Team Belgravia Leisure led by Olympic gold medalist Brooke Hanson OAM #TeamBelgravia;

  • Team Reidy, led by Bondi Lifeguard Andrew Reid, supporting OneWave - #TeamReidy;

  • Masters Swimming led by Swimming legend Dawn Fraser AC, MBE and World Record holder 100 year-old George Corones, supporting Beyond Blue - #TeamMasters;

  • Surf Life Saving Australia, led by Coolangatta Champions Ali Day and Georgia Miller - #TeamSurfLS;

  • Beyond the Black Line led by Olympians Linley Frame and Josh Beaver - #TeamBTBL; and

  • MS Mega Swim led by Paralympic Cyclist Carol Cooke, AM - #TeamMS.

Masters Swimming has taken the early lead. Amazingly Dawn Fraser noted that over her lifetime, her swim log calculates to swimming two laps of Australia on her own!

Anyone can join one of the teams, when they pledge their swim. It's about which swim tribe or cause you connect with.

To pledge your swim, simply head to the Australia Swims website, calculate how far you can swim in 10 days, pick your team and start swimming!

We also got a calendar of all the swimming activities taking place during the 10-day challenge to keep you motivated.
