Macarthur Girls High School opens their newly renovated 25m pool for the public. The 1.8m deep, 25m pool, at Macarthur Girls High School will be used a temporary facility while the city of Parramatta Council constructs a replacement for the War Memorial Pool which was demolished in April 2017, to make way for the Western Sydney Stadium.
The High School pool is now the only option open to the public in the Parramatta area, the refurbished pool will hold swim school classes from 3rd September. Parramatta Council Aquatic Manager Suzanne Raven said "The timing couldn’t be better. Come September, we’re expecting up to 600 students to register for the swim school classes which will put together across Spring and Summer.”
Steeped in history the Macarthur Girls High School Pool had to have it’s own renovation before becoming the stand in option. The $1.5 million project to upgrade the pool faced major delays due to a range of complications. Acting Director of City Services, Jim Stefan explained “As you can imagine, refurbishing an existing pool that is some 50 years old has its challenges. It was necessary to review and upgrade the utilities associated with the pool, resulting in a facility that will better meet the users’ needs for many years to come.”
The renovations included new toilets, improved heating and lighting, along with raising the levels of the diving sections to accommodate more classes in the water. The upgrade also included additional street parking and a wheelchair accessible public entry.
The pool was completed back in 1965 with the parents of students attending the school between the years of 1961 and 1965 contributing 4 shillings a week, raising a grand total of 10,000 pounds for the construction of such a lavish school facility.
