Redeveloped Wellington Aquatic and Leisure Centre Set to Open

Dubbo Regional Council’s new-look Wellington Aquatic and Leisure Centre is set to open to the public on Saturday 16th November.

An open day will highlighting the redeveloped facility which includes a new eight-lane Olympic Pool, heated learn-to-swim pool, splash pad area, along with brand new amenities, kiosk and club room. The $8.25 million Wellington Aquatic Leisure Centre was redeveloped with money that came from the amalgamation of the Wellington and Dubbo Councils in 2016.

Advising that the new facility has been long-awaited by the Wellington community, Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Ben Shields stated “I am very excited to finally open the new doors to the Wellington Aquatic and Leisure Centre. I know the community has been patiently waiting, having skipped last year’s swim season, but this brand new centre is definitely worth the wait.”

Mayor Shields also acknowledged that there might be some concerns about how Council will fill the pool during the current water restrictions, adding “I’d like to remind people of how important spaces such as this are for our wellbeing. Recreational spaces have the ability to provide social inclusion, refuge during times of heat, along with fantastic sporting opportunities.

“Opening this aquatic centre has been planned and water has been allocated to ensure it’s full, open and ready to use on 16th November 2019.”

Dubbo Regional Council’s Chief Executive, Michael McMahon said it was exciting to be able to provide additional facilities for the community.

McMahon concluded "this new centre has some wonderful additions that Wellington hasn’t had the luxury of having at the previous centre, particularly with the inclusion of a heated learn to swim pool making ‘Learn to Swim’ classes a lot more appealing to those with small children.”
