With two months until Life Saving World Championships 2018 (LWC2018) begin the Australian Life Saving Team will head to Germany to compete against Europe’s best Pool Rescue athletes.
Following the resounding success of last years German Cup where the Australian Life Saving Team (ALT) took home all major individual and team pointscore awards, the ALT will return to Germany take on a shortened version of the competition as a lead-in event to LWC2018.
World record holders Matt Davis and Prue Davies will lead a six-strong team returning to Warendorf looking to continue on a strong finish to the domestic Pool Rescue season. From the recent Australian Titles held in Adelaide, Davis was untouchable picking up nine gold medals from his nine individual and team events. Similarly, impressive was the work of Currumbin teammate Davies who was able to break two Australian records along with her impressive haul of medals.
Fellow Queensland based athletes Chelsea Gillett, Mariah Jones and Sam Bell had impressive showings of their own at the recent Australian Pool Champs with Gillett adding three individual gold medals and yet another Australian record to her impressive resume while Bell picked up six medals and Jones five of her own.
West Australian youngster Jake Smith has continued his rise and will be looking to impress in Germany after shaking off a nagging ankle injury sustained at Sanyo Cup earlier in the year.
ALT Head Coach Kurt Wilson shared his excitement at another opportunity to race against Europe’s best Pool Rescue athletes just 8 weeks out from World Championships. Any chance we can put our team in an international racing environment is great experience for our athletes and will only benefit during crunch time at LWC2018.”
Wilson Added, “following great individual and team success at this competition last year we felt it was a great opportunity to come back and compete against the rest of the world to once again gauge our performance.”
The 2018 German Cup will feature only individual events where team pointscores and trophies will not be presented. All members of the Australian Life Saving Team will have a four day team camp over 25th-28th October to finalise preparations for Life Saving World Championships 2018.
