The National Aquatic Industry Safety Committee endorsed a number of recommendations regarding the structure and content of the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations at its last meeting. Please find below an update to these changes:
2018 Projects
National Policy for Guidelines
The National Policy will be updated and uploaded to the Hub and will now include a specific section for the Auditing of the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations. This section includes Auditor Training, Qualifications, Professional Development and Accreditation requirements as well as the best practice process that Aquatic Facilities should expect when audits are undertaken.
This will be available from the 7th July 2018
Swimming Water Safety and Aquatic Exercise Programs
Following the public comments and revision stages of the GSPO, the Supervision sections will be split in two areas. One will be Supervision the other will be Swimming, Water Safety and Aquatic Exercise Programs. This section of the GSPO will go to the National Aquatic Industry Safety Committee on the 5th July for endorsement and includes the below revised guidelines:

Aquatic Supervision
The industry has provided a great response to the public comment stage of the Supervision Guidelines. Over 220 comments and feedback has been provided which the NAISC has been filtering through in stages. It is the intention of the Committee to work through the remaining comments over the next 3 months prior to its September meeting.
The vision is to have the Supervision section of the Guidelines endorsed in September 2018.
2019 Projects
Incident Management
Following the publication of the RLSSA 10 Year Drowning Analysis into Public Pool Drowning Deaths the NAISC endorsed to expand the Incident Management section of the Guidelines to include 2 new sub sections. These are as follows:
Incident Reporting
This will include specific guidance on the reporting, collection and storage of Incident Data in Aquatic Facilities in line with Classification of Occurrence System – Adopted by all State and Territory governments for the recording of workplace injuries and workers compensation claims as well as the International Statistical Classification of Diseases. Adopted by all Australian Government Health Systems.
Aquatic Technical Operations
The NAISC have endorsed to establish a new section of the Guidelines called 'Aquatic Technical Operations'. This section will support existing state/territory health and Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances guidelines but also incorporate information about the Safe Design of Plant rooms, Confined Spaces and general risk management. The NAISC has endorsed to establish a Subject Matter Advisory Group which will lead this project until its development and implementation.
