GSPO - Clarification of Training Qualificiations

A number of enquiries have arisen through the Aquatic and Swim School Industry into the application of SV2 Swimming and Water Safety Teachers and the ‘Initial Training and Qualifications’ requirements within the GSPO. The following clarification explains the intention of the GSPO and its implementation.

Scope:

The clarification applies for the following Guideline:

  • SV2 Swimming and Water Safety Teachers (2.2.1)

Clarification and Reasoning

  • As part of the recent updates to the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations every Guideline now has an ‘effective as of date’. This means that an individual Guideline is only relevant and effective from the date onwards and is not retrospective.

  • 2.2 Initial Training and Qualifications is relevant for persons who are seeking to obtain, or who have obtained, their award after the ‘effective as of date’ of the 01/09/2018 of the Guideline, or when someone has not met the requirements for professional development in order to maintain industry currency and may be required to complete a new unit of competency or skill set as a result.

  • If an individual has completed a previous version of a unit of competency, skill set or industry recognised award, (i.e. AUSTSWIM Certificate) and has met the requirements for professional development in order to maintain industry currency since that time, they are not required to obtain new units of competency or a new skill set unless it is specifically stated within state/territory legislation or government regulations requiring them to do so.

  • N.B. Some RTOs may issue individuals a new unit of competency and/or skill set as part of their currency and professional development activities however this is above and in addition to the requirements of intentions of the GSPO.
